Austrian universities do not operate a campus system as commonly found in English-speaking countries, but a student housing facility is located in the same block as our university. In Austria, the “Austrian Academic Exchange Service” (ÖAD) organizes rooms in student halls of residence with monthly rents between € 220 and € 600 per person. These are mostly shared rooms, but single rooms are also available. Once a deposit has been paid, the ÖAD will reserve a room for you. Students themselves are responsible for finding a place to live. It is recommended that students travel to Vienna in good time before the beginning of the semester.

Several students often share a rented flat in which each has his or her own room, while the bathroom and kitchen are shared. Available places in such flat-shares are often posted on the notice boards (“schwarzes Brett”) located in universities, refectories and cafeterias. If you want to rent a room or flat, you will be able to find vacant rooms and flats advertised in local newspapers (mainly the Saturday issues of the likes of Immobilienbazar, Presse, Der Standard, Krone and Kurier am Samstag) as well as in the student newspapers and on notice boards.

Payment of a deposit is generally due when the rent agreement is signed. This usually amounts to between one and two monthly rents and the deposit will be returned to you if the flat is left in good condition when you move out. If you find your flat or room through an estate agent, you will have to pay a fee of up to three monthly rents.
